Jaswant Singh Gill was an additional chief mining engineer at Coal India Limited. He is best known for his heroic role in the 1989 Coal India mine rescue operation at the Mahabir Colliery in Raniganj, West Bengal.
Raniganj Coalfields Rescue: In November 1989, the mine was flooded after an explosion. 65 miners were trapped. Gill, displaying remarkable courage and resourcefulness, designed and supervised the lowering of a steel capsule into the mine.
Capsule Design and Operation: He personally descended into the mine shaft using the capsule. One by one, he rescued all the trapped miners.
Recognition: For his bravery and dedication, Jaswant%20Singh%20Gill was awarded the Sarvottam%20Jeevan%20Raksha%20Padak, a gallantry award from the President of India.
Legacy: He is remembered as a national hero and a symbol of courage and quick thinking in the face of disaster. A Bollywood movie Mission Raniganj was made based on his bravery and actions.
